The Wizard's Workshop . . . Ghost Detecting Potion

My kids were having fun with the potions book today. We set up a wizard's classroom in the kitchen and they came up with this little demonstration. This is the Ghost Detecting Potion. Watch for the color change to happen in the bottle. The liquid turns blue, but it only lasts a few seconds before turning back to the light gray color.

Yikes! a ghost is in the room!

Ingredients: Water, Flitterbloom Tablet, Ground Snake Fang, and Shifting Mists.

Behind The Magic
For all you science geeks out there, this is a classic blue-bottle reaction. Water, glucose, sodium hydroxide (or lye), and methylene blue. The ingredients are not that hard to find. If you live in the city, you can buy them all locally and they won't cost you an arm and a leg.

The best part--my kids (even my 16 year old son) can spend hours playing and experimenting. This is so awesome!!! I can picture the time when my little girl gets into a high school chemistry class and recognizes some of the experiments she did as a child. I can just see the teacher preforming a blue-bottle reaction for the class and my daughter bursting out laughing because a ghost is in the room.

The book I'm working on has a collection of science experiments--wait--not science experiments. Potions. Lots and lots of potions. Potions for attracting zombies, and potions that will help you defeat werewolves and sparkling vampires, and potions to help you catch night fairies, and there is even a . . . . Love Potion! Oo la' la' . Each potion will have step by step instructions, along with where to get all the ingredients.

Well I'm off to the potions class room to cook up a little magic. Happy potion-making to all you wizards out there.
